Become a yoga instructor-What are the plus points of becoming a Yoga Instructor

Yoga is said to be extremely beneficial both physically and mentally. It is said to help relieve stress and keep you fit in every way. Many people who have attended yoga courses have a desire to convey the benefits of yoga to others. However, just because you can agilely perform the various yoga exercises and attain flexibility in yoga postures does not imply that you can immediately start off giving yoga lessons.

Why should I attend a teacher-training course to become a Yoga Instructor

As with any teaching career that you take up, it is a good idea to be properly certified to teach yoga whether or not it is absolutely necessary to teach in this field. The course will help you to get better knowledge of what yoga is all about, its philosophy, its styles, the right breathing and meditation techniques, etc. You will subsequently learn the requisite skills needed to convey all you know to your students in an effective way.

What are the plus points of becoming a Yoga Instructor

Source of income, obviously!

Flexible hours

Makes you feel good to make others feel good

Ensures that you continue to stay fit

Wait! Dont rush to pay the fees of just any course offering training programs!

How do I choose the right Yoga Instructor Course

Dont opt for yoga instructor course X merely because it is cheaper than course Y. Similarly, the most expensive course in not necessarily the best. What you should look for is not the fees, but its reputation as an effective teacher-training course. Ask at your local yoga centre, enquire from family, friends and neighbors, and find out from office colleagues about good courses.

Some courses (in USA) that aim to make you a qualified yoga instructor are having a certification from the Yoga Alliance organisation. This organisation provides 2 programs: (1) A 200-hour program: this includes training and practice of the traditional yoga techniques (asanas, meditation, etc), teaching styles, anatomy &; physiology, studying yoga philosophies, a few hours assisting others to teach as well as a few hours actively teaching. (2) A 500-hour program: this includes the same aspects as the 200-hour program, but with additional hours required for each. Once the requisite program has been completed, the teachers of the yoga institute / school are then qualified to be Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs).

Some courses also claim to be recognized by the American Council of Exercise (ACE), so you need to check such claims too.

There are also specific teacher-training programs for certain types of yoga, so you need to be clear for which type of yoga you would like to become an instructor.

What are the costs of a Yoga Instructor course

Well, that naturally depends on the duration and type of course.

You can attend a very basic workshop for, say, just 2 days, where you can learn how to effectively teach 30-40 yoga poses. The schedule can be quite hectic, spanning the entire day till late evening. You are then required to practice teaching for about 7-8 hours at a community centre. Such a workshop could have tuition fees of about $300 to $400.

A full-fledged course, with daily schedules for 3-4 weeks, can cost thousands of dollars.

Those who are already experienced instructors can attend the advanced level courses of a reputed yoga teacher-training organisation. At this level, you learn more advanced breathing techniques, more effective communication skills and learning styles, advanced class formats, more detailed health benefits, etc.

You can also opt for a home study yoga teacher-training program that could have a starting cost of around $350.

Warning Note: No bunking classes! Attendance policies are very strict for most courses. If you do not give full attendance, you are quite likely not going to get any credits, and, subsequently, no certificate.

Once you have obtained the requisite teaching skills, the next step is to be clear about whom you would like to teach. Your options:

To teach children

To teach those over 60 years

To teach all members of a family in the privacy of their home

To teach employees of an organisation / educational institute

To teach members of a local gym / fitness club

To teach women

You can also teach a special form of yoga, such as yoga techniques and postures for

Those suffering from Pilates

Pregnant women

New mothers

Overweight individuals

If you are lucky enough to get a position as a yoga instructor with good payment terms, thats great! But what if you would like to be independent That definitely requires a great deal of thoughtful planning.

Demarcate a space in your house if you are planning to teach from home

Decide on a budget costs of rental space (if you are going to teach elsewhere), and costs of equipment (such as yoga balls) being the prime aspects.

Supposing a student is unfortunately injured during a teaching session, what will be involved vis--vis legal and insurance issues

You need to literally step out and market yourself as a yoga instructor hand out door-to-door fliers, advertise in the local paper, put up a sign at your friendly baker outlet, tell your friends and relatives to spread the good word try out the works.

Once the students are crossing the threshold, don't just start off willy-nilly with lessons. Make sure you have a prior lesson schedule in mind what you will teach on a particular day and how you will teach it (maybe select some music for relaxation).

So you are now well on the way to becoming a yoga instructor!"> But do remember that practice makes perfect, and you definitely need to put in certain hours of daily practice yourself and not be lax. Then only can you be a really effective yoga instructor.
