Atkins diet

The Atkins Diet is nonsense... Any book that recommends unlimited amounts of meat, butter, and eggs, as this one does, in my opinion is dangerous. The author who makes the suggestion is guilty of malpractice.[4],

These words came from the chair of Harvard department and that too on record before a 1973 U.S Senate select committee which was investigation fad diets. And this does not come as surprise if you know that spokesperson from the largest organization of food and nutrition profession, American Dietary Association has called the Atkins diet as nightmare of diet.

So what is this Atkins diet, which has been condemned by the world over by the medical fraternity? The Atkins diet or the Atkins Nutritional Approach is the low carbohydrate diet initiated by its Dr. Robert Atkins in 1960. He tested it on his ten thousand patients before finally coming up with a series of books in 1972. The first book in the series was Dr Atkins Diet Revolution. The main logic of Atkins diet was to loose fat through law-carbohydrates diet then low fat diet. That?s why his theory was called low-carb craze and was scrutinized and somewhat criticized since its inception. Let?s find out the truth behind the nightmare of diet about which the American Dietary Association has talked.

Anything new is always criticized and thus it was very certain that a diet that wanted people to eat like gluttons and doesn?t restrict fat-free diet did created uproar in the western society. But, it has proved itself worth as the Atkins diet have million of followers who want to loose weight the glutton way. The reasons Atkins gave for obesity are firstly eating refined carbohydrates like sugar, flour and high-fructose syrups and secondly the saturated fat is treated as nutritional trouble. But on this he argued, that only trans fats from sources such as hydrogenated oil needs to be curbed in diet. His low-carb diet is based on a state of metabolism of the body called ketosis, in which he writes that when a person eat low carb foods, the body in search of energy will look for the carbohydrates to get that energy, but since you are eating low carbohydrates, the body will find its way to find the required energy, and here it will start using the saturated fat in your body and thus the extra fat will decrease from body.

Dr Atkins never ever wanted people to gorge nor he find the exercise unimportant but the argument on which his diet plan was based was a simple logic that is to eat low carbohydrates so that body metabolism find other source of getting the required energy. Dr. Atkins in his book New Diet Revolution claimed that the low-carb diet produces a "metabolic advantage" where the body burns more calories, overall, than on normal diets, and also expels some unused calories.

The popularity of Atkins diet grew to its apogee in the year 2003-2004, when almost one in every eleventh American was following the advice of Atkins. There are four phases in Atkins diet plan:

1. The induction: the carbohydrates restriction is at its helm in the first stage, where the carbohydrates are limited to an intake of 20 net grams per day. The target here was losing 1 to 2 pound in a day. Though carbohydrates intake is restricted other food such as meats, fish shellfish eggs can be eaten in liberal amount.

2. Ongoing weight loss: Carbohydrates are increased at 5 gram per week. The goal of this stage to find out the critical carbohydrates level for losing and this way to find out how food group is increasing glycolic level and how food within that group is affecting the craving .This stage is followed till the person is able to reach the 10 pound of the targeted weight control for this stage. Some fresh dairy is introduced in this stage. The food group can be put in rungs and has to be followed as per the sequence. But one has option to skip a rung if the person does not want to include the rung in his permanent food habits. The rungs are: Induction acceptable vegetable, fresh dairy, nuts, berries, alcohol, legumes, other fruits, starchy vegetable and grains.

3. Pre maintenance: the carbohydrates are increased again at this stage by 10 net carb a week. This stage is meant to find out the critical carbohydrate level for maintenance which is the maximum number of carbohydrates the dieter can eat without gaining the extra kilos.

4. Lifetime maintenance: This phase is for whole life time when you have to follow the diet plan of Atkins by eating the intended carbohydrates and in meanwhile if you are gain weight then return back to the first stage that is Induction stage and move forward.

Though the Atkins diet had been gaining not very good reviews since its inception but a recent study has shown otherwise. Published in JAMA on March 7, 2007, by Gardener at Stanford University, women lost more weight and experienced more favorable overall metabolic effects at 12 months than in other diets. Changes in other HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and mean blood pressure significantly favored Atkins diet then any other diet in the research. So, however world over a voice of criticism has always followed Atkins even in his death , where the cynics have claimed that his death which was due to a head injury , was actually due to a fall which was triggered due to his obesity. So believe it or not but the fact is that one in every 11 American is on Atkins diet.
